one day before you plan to hike, you head to a small ranger station.  at the ranger
station you put your name down and wait until 9am (sometimes mountain time and
sometimes pacific time – depending on the season).  at 9am the ranger(s) pick 10
people from the crowd, some of whom you have probably made friends with. 
those 10 people get to hike to “the wave”.
